99Rock Music News: Tom DeLonge Leaves Blink-182 'Indefinitely'

by Jay Tilles of Radio.com

Tom DeLonge, co-founder of Blink-182 has left the band 'indefinitely.'

In a statement released this morning from the band's publicist, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker explain the show must go on.

Matt Skiba of the Alkaline Trio will join Blink-182 in replacement of Tom DeLonge at the 8th annual Musink Music and Tattoo Festival. "We were all set to play this festival and record a new album and Tom kept putting it off without reason. A week before we were scheduled to go in to the studio we got an email from his manager explaining that he didn't want to participate in any Blink-182 projects indefinetly, but would rather work on his other non-musical endeavors." Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus plan to honor all Blink-182 commitments including the Musink Festival and are excited to have singer/guitarist Matt Skiba join them for this project. "No hard feelings, but the show must go on for our fans." Additionally, Skiba will continue to make new music and tour with the Alkaline Trio.
The news comes on the heels of this morning's Musink announcement where it was revealed that Alkaline Trio's Matt Skiva would be filling in for DeLonge. Within minutes, speculation of a break-up began circulating among fans.
The festival has become an important one to Barker. This is the second year that the drummer will curate the bands. Among this year's performers are Bad Religion, Rancid, Yelawolf, OFF!, Sick of It All and Ignite.

The 3-day fest takes place March 20-22 at the OC Fair & Events Center in Costa Mesa, Calif with tickets going on sale this Friday at 10:00am PT.

99Rock Music News: Death Cab for Cutie Debut Three New Songs in Seattle: Watch

(Danny Clinch for Atlantic Records)

By Philip Cosores of Radio.com
Death Cab for Cutie have recently announced the band's eighth full-length album, Kintsugi, due for March 31 of this year. This album is particularly noteworthy because it will be the last featuring founding member, guitarist, and producer Chris Walla.

Now, thanks to a special intimate show in their hometown of Seattle last night (Jan. 20) at the Crocodile, we have a little bit of an idea what the new record will sound like. Revolt points out that three new songs were played, and they even got recordings of the new jams.

Besides playing the new songs, the performancewas noteworthy as being their first without Walla.

Check out the clips below of the new tracks, titled "The Ghosts of Beverly Drive," "No Room In Frame," and "Black Sun" respectively.

It's no secret that Jack White is an avid professional baseball fan, regularly seen at games rooting on his hometown Detroit Tigers. Now White's fandom has resulted in the guitar hero being graced with his very own baseball card.

The official card will be part of the 2015 Topps Series 1 set, appearing on what's known as a First Pitch Insert card sporting a vintage Tigers jersey in a shot taken when he threw out the first pitch at a Detroit home game last summer. See the card it all its glory below.

99Rock Music News: Tom Morello, Serj Tankian Cover Ozzy Osbourne's 'Crazy Train' for Randy Rhoads Tribute: Listen

As part of a tribute to the late guitarist Randy Rhoads, titled Immortal Randy Rhoads – The Ultimate Tribute, Tom Morello and Serj Tankian have covered one of the most recognizable songs in rock, Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train," co-written by Rhoads.

"Randy Rhoads is my favorite guitar player of all time," Morello told Rolling Stone. "It was his poster on my wall when I was practicing eight hours a day, and I named my firstborn son, Rhoads, after him. Serj, Rudy, Vinny and I rocked 'Crazy Train' as a sonic tribute to one of rock's greatest fallen heroes. Crank it."

Rhoads' first band, Quiet Riot, got the attention of Osbourne, who plucked him out of relative obscurity to join his band Blizzard of Oz.

Considered a virtuoso by fellow musician, the young guitar player went on to co-write songs for two of Osbourne's most popular albums, Blizzard Of Oz and Diary of A Madman.

Rhodes died in a plane accident on March 19, 1982. He was only 25 years old.

In addition to the album, the package will contain a bonus DVD, including a feature on the Musonia School of Music, a teaching school on North Hollywood, Calif., set up by Randy's mother and run by his brother Kelle Rhoads.

Featuring 20 artists, Immortal Randy Rhoads – The Ultimate Tribute will be released on March 13 by UDR Music.

99Rock Music News: Rivers Cuomo Keeps Getting Fan Mail Meant For Incubus

Rivers Cuomo (Michael Buckner/Getty Images)

Weezer lead singer Rivers Cuomo has a problem that many other rock stars wish they had—too much fan mail.

The problem is that a lot of the fan mail he's receiving isn't meant for him.

Rather, it's intended for an entirely different artist: Brandon Boyd, frontman of long-running hard rock band Incubus.

"I get these elaborate fan packages, only they're not for me, they're for the singer of Incubus, Brandon Boyd," he explained during an appearance on Larry King.

Neither he nor Boyd have an explanation for why this has been happening.

99Rock Music News: Chris Cornell Has A New Solo Album on the Way

(Kevin Winter/Getty Images)

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell is going to have a busy year between working with his band, fronting a Mad Season reunion, and, now, heading into the studio to work on his next solo effort.

Today on Twitter, Cornell simultaneously announced that he has a new solo album on the way and acknowledged the unfortunate coincidence that he shares a name with the Ohio man who's been accused of planning a bomb attack on the U.S, Capitol.

But to focus on the only the good, Cornell has a new album on the way. His next full-length will follow up his 2009 LP, Scream, which he worked on with producer Timbaland. Even though that album was Cornell's first top 10 breakthrough, debuting at No. 10 on the Billboard 200, it didn't get a lot of love commercially or critically—not even from his peers.

Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor even called it embarrassing at the time in a since-deleted tweet.

99Rock Music News: The White Stripes Announce New Live Album/DVD, 'Under Amazonian Lights'

The White Stripes (Scott Gries/Getty Images)

By Philip Cosores
Hot on the heels of being named as one of the headliners for Coachella, Jack White had another announcement for today: a new White Stripes live album.
Sure, his breakthrough band has been broken up for nearly four years, but the Third Man Records' Vault subscription series has been slowly trickling out previously unreleased tunes from the duo. The newest one holds a special significance, though, as the recording of Under Amazonian Lights took place in Manaus, Brazil on June 1st, 2005. That just happens to be the day White married his now ex-wife, model/musician Karen Elson.
The press release alludes to this point (via CoS):
Words do not ably describe the beauty of the Teatro Amazonas nor the furor riled up by the White Stripes appearance. Not only was there fear that the amplification of the band would cause the plaster in the building to crack and possible fall and injure attendees, but out of custom/fear/lord-knows-what the crowd remained seated until being explicitly asked to stand from the stage by Jack White himself. If that wasn't enough, during the show Jack and Meg ventured outside the venue to play an entirely unamplified version of "We Are Going to Be Friends" for the assembled multitude of fans unable to purchase tickets and watching the performance via closed-circuit feed. The resultant melee was arguably a riot and was lovingly captured by the film crew documenting that evening's importance. All together what it makes is one of the best true rock and roll moments of the past decade. Heck, Jack White even got married that day.
The packaging for this CD/DVD release includes a 7-inch with two previously unreleased White Stripes demos: "Let You Down" and "Ain't No Sweeter Than Rita Blues".

99Rock Music News: Bono: 'I May Never Be Able To Play Guitar Again'

The U2 frontman has posted a long letter to fans on the band's official site, speaking at length about the events of 2014 and what lies ahead in 2015. Writing about his serious bike accident in November, Bono reveals, "I broke my hand, my shoulder, my elbow and my face but the real injury this year was to my Irish pride as it was discovered that under my tracksuit I was wearing yellow and black Lycra cycling shorts. Yes, LYCRA. This is not very rock 'n' roll."

He continues, "Recovery has been more difficult than I thought… As I write this, it is not clear that I will ever play guitar again. The band have reminded me that neither they nor Western civilization are depending on this." Bono goes on to say, "I personally would very much miss fingering the frets of my green Irish falcon or my (RED) Gretsch. Just for the pleasure, aside from writing tunes. But then does the Edge, or Jimmy Page, or any guitarist you know have a titanium elbow, as I do now? I'm all elbows, I am."

Regarding his recovery, Bono explains that this letter will be all he says publicly before U2 launches a world tour later this year. "The consequences of this freak accident are significant enough that I will have to concentrate hard to be ready for the U2 tour in fitness terms," says the singer. "As a result I have cancelled every public appearance and decided this missive is all the communication I can manage for the first half of 2015, beyond muttering and singing to myself of course."

Bono also goes in depth on his recent revelation that he's struggled with glaucoma for decades, an admission he made on "The Graham Norton Show" to the host's surprise last year. "I think it shocked him a little bit… it certainly surprised the band that I'd gone public, but maybe it is time to be honest about such things," he says in his letter. "I remember I had the nickname old red eyes. I remember the agony of flashbulb staying permanently in my vision for the rest of the day after I'd been photographed."

He continues, "I had many eye checks over the years but one of the sly things about this 'silent thief' is that you can have 20/20 vision straight ahead for some years even after your peripheral vision goes… If it's not treated, blindness results. I think anyone who reaches 40 should have their eyes properly checked."
