99Rock Music News:  Watch The Dirty Heads Perform ‘Warming Sun’ From Their Ernie Ball Set Me Up Session

The Dirty Heads and The Ernie Ball Set Me Up Series came together recently, resulting in an amazing rendition of “Warming Sun” from their 2013 release, Home – Phantoms of Summer: The Acoustic Sessions. Listen as the band talks about their formation, development, and their perspective on success, all the while watching a live rendition of “Warming Sun” recorded exclusively for The Ernie Ball Set Me Up Series.

Coming out of Huntington Beach, The Dirty Heads first garnered attention with their 2008 debut release, Any Port in the Storm, which featured the hit “Lay Me Down.” Since then, the rock/reggae/hip-hop band released a second studio album, Cabin by the Sea, in 2012.

The Ernie Ball Set Me Up is a one of a kind web series where they “visit with some of todays inspiring players and dig into what makes their instruments unique.” All performances are filmed at the Ernie Ball showroom in Los Angeles. In exchange for getting a all of the band’s instruments in top recording shape, Ernie Ball gets “stories of the instruments past, how an artist’s gear effects their craft and an intimate performance using the gear.”

99Rock Music News:  Green Day To Release 18 Demos on Record Store Day

By Jay Tilles

In conjunction with this year’s Record Store Day, the celebration of vinyl slingers worldwide, Green Day have announced the release Demolicious. The 20-track set will include 18 demos, an unreleased track, “State of Shock,” and an acoustic version of “Stay The Night” from the ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! and ¡Tré! trilogy recording sessions in Oakland, CA. According to the band’s Facebook page, the package will be offered on colored ‪vinyl, ‎CD and even ‎cassette on April 19.

This isn’t the first time Green Day has contributed unique offerings to Record Store Day. In 2011 the band released a 7” single featuring Hüsker Dü’s “Don’t Want to Know if You Are Lonely” as well as their take on the 1986 song. Two years prior, Billie Joe and crew honored record retailers by reissuing the classic punk album Dookie on green translucent vinyl.

As exciting as this news may be, several questions remain. Will the band release everything as a package or as individual singles? And, who knew there was a cassette manufacturing facility still in operation?

99Rock Music News:  Watch Coldplay’s Video for Their New Song ‘Midnight’

By Jay Tilles

Coldplay surprised fans today with the unexpected release of a new track and accompanying video titled “Midnight,” presumably from their forthcoming album.

The Mary Wigmore-directed clip was produced with a black and white film negative look adding to the already atmospheric feel of singer Chris Martin‘s heavily effected vocals. Watch the five-minute video below:

Although not much is known about the band’s new record, one thing is certain, the album title won’t be as confusing as 2011′s record-turned comic book, Mylo Xyloto. Martin laughed about it with Australian radio station 2dayfm saying, “The next one we’re releasing is much easier to pronounce.”

Coldplay will perform at the iTunes Festival at SXSW in Austin, TX on March 11.

99Rock Music News:  Hear Foo Fighters’ ‘Everlong’ Played By an Old Dot Matrix Printer

By Shannon Carlin

Ever wonder what the Foo Fighters’ 1997 hit “Everlong” would sound like played on an old dot matrix printer? Well you’re not alone. Someone has actually figured it out. Someone with a lot of time on their hands.

Last year, MIDIdesaster uploaded a clip featuring their old modified printer planning a version of the song that sounded like it was straight out of an 8-bit videogame.

Dan Carroll, the mastermind behind this nifty trick, explained on his Vimeo page that the old 24-pin dot matrix printer has been converted into a MIDI compatible sound generator. It can play up to 21 notes at the same time and features up to 16 MIDI channels, each with their own individual volume and pitch.

But this printer doesn’t just play old Foo Fighters’ hits, it’s been trained to play Green Day’s “Having a Blast,” The Benny Hill theme song and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.”

Watch this very talented printer play “Everlong” below.

And, as a bonus, here’s “Hysteria” by Muse.

Listen to 3 Doors Down on iHeartRadio

3 Doors Down rocker Todd Harrell is knocking on trouble's door once again.

According to the "Sun-Herald," Harrell was arrested on yet another DUI charge in D'Iberville, Mississippi Tuesday night.  Police made the arrest after a caller reported seeing a man slumped over the steering wheel of a car at about 7:00 pm local time.

Harrell was booked at the local police department.  The municipal court set a cash bond of $1,789.

Harrell was previously arrested in D'Iberville on a drug-related DUI charge in July 2012.  A month after that incident, he was charged with vehicular manslaughter in Nashville, accused of causing another driver's death due to impaired driving.

99Rock Music News:  Korn Singer Says Obama Uses Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, & More To “Distract” People

Remember when the Miley Cyrus twerk incident that everybody would not shut up about back in the summer of 2013?

Korn frontman Jonathan Davis thinks that is just one example of how President Barack Obama is using Cyrus, and other celebrities, to become a dictator.

Davis explained the meaning behind the band's new song and video, Spike in my Veins, to TMZ.  The singer says:

"I think that our government uses those people to distract from what's really going on...the thing with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs, when that went down, I think Barack Obama passed a law that he is basically a dictator, he can imprison whoever he wants, he doesn't have to charge them, he can hold them as long as he wants."

It sounds like Davis is referring to the National Defense Authorization Act.  The president signed that bill into a law back in January of 2012.

99Rock Music News:  Trent Reznor Calls The Grammys “Utter Waste Of Time”

By Nadia Noir

After playing one of music’s most arguably celebrated nights, Trent Reznor took to Twitter and admonished the night with an expletive, saying: “Music’s biggest night… to be disrespected. A heartfelt F*** YOU guys.”

The all-around musical genius and Nine Inch Nails frontman talked to a New Zealand news program and called the night “an utter waste of time.”

“When this came up as an option, ‘Hey, the Grammys would like you to play,’ you know, quite frankly it was flattering. I’m not a fan of the Grammys, as I’ve vocally expressed in the past, I don’t think I’ve ever sat through an entire broadcast. I know I’ve never attended one.” explained Reznor to 3 News.

“But the way my head works is, to try to approach it from, ‘Okay, if we did do it, what could be the upside?’ And Josh [Homme, Queens of The Stone Age] and I spent a long time talking about the pros and cons. You know, ‘Do we want to be on a shit show on TV? No, not really. Do we want to be affiliated with the Grammys? No, not really. Would we like to reach a large audience and actually do something with integrity on our terms? Well, yeah. Let’s roll the dice and go into it with the best intentions, with a performance we think is worthy and might – you know – stand out from the crowd. Or it might not!’”

In the end, Reznor says that the two rock stars weren’t expecting that “level of insult” from the awards. He says he doesn’t regret it per se, but that they would never, ever consider “possibly patronizing that event in any form.”

We’d say there will be no hesitation to how Reznor will promote Hesitation Marks from now on.

For the very first time last night (Feb 18), Jimmy Kimmel went head-to-head with Jimmy Fallon in the coveted 11:35 late-night spot.

And while Fallon was in New York showing off his hip-hop dance moves with Will Smith and having U2 perform at the Top of the Rock, Kimmel was once again sharing his Hollywood stage with Silverlake rockers, Silversun Pickups, who performed their alt rock classic “Lazy Eye” as well as a new single, “Cannibal.”

Following the live performance the band premiered their new video for “Cannibal” on the late night show’s new YouTube channel, Jimmy Kimmel Live Music, which gives Kimmel’s more musically inclined fans an outlet to find their favorite performances from the late night show, along with other treats from the host’s favorite artists.
