It may have started out as a cruel April Fool’s joke, but now, thanks to the twisted mind of Hyperkin‘s Chris Gallizzi, the “Smart Boy” has turned out to be a real thing.

Gallizzi posted an image on Reddit this week of a small console that essentially turns an iPhone into an old school Game Boy that actually works with classic Nintendo cartridges.

“We wanted to create a retro device that can be easily adapted into any modern gamer’s arsenal of devices,” said Gallizzi.

But if you don’t have an iPhone, they’re not cutting you out of the deal. “We are working on an open side panel version for Android phones,” he told Reddit.

According to the press release, the console will look just like the old school Game Boy too.

“Although in early conceptual development stages the Smart Boy will come in the classic ’80s Grey,’ a staple of retro electronics,” Gallizzi explains. “More colors may follow. It will also feature an eight-way D-pad; two action buttons; a start and select button; and an included battery that can be charged through the phone itself. The gameplay itself will output through the iPhone 6 Plus’ own screen.

The Smart Boy will integrate with the phone by way of an a downloadable app. “There will be noticeable upscaling, a cheat database, and save states as well.”
