It’s the 20th anniversary of The Offspring‘s album, Smash. The album from the Southern California-based punk band came out in 1994 and “was, at the time, the best-selling album ever released on an independent label.” When The Offspring first broke, they had been playing around for ten years and weren’t allowed to do the Roxy or The Whisky said Kevin “Noodles” Wasserman in an interview.
“Come Out And Play” was the first smash-hit single from Smash. “Right away we started playing it, and that sort of sparked everything. I think it was Jed the Fish playing us as his “Catch of the Day.” And then the song made it onto the Furious 5 at 9. It was in heavy rotation, for sure,” said Nick.
“It got a really good response from listeners. I know I was calling every time I heard it!"
The Orange County-based band who won the Impact Award from the OC Music Awards in 2014are planning on perpetuating that impact with a 20th anniversary CD and Vinyl edition of Smash; one option with a collector’s box full of goodies like patches, pins, a replica of the Smash tour all-access pass, and more. There will also be anniversary merch like t-shirts and The Offspring will beperforming the entire Smash album live at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa on July 11th. For now, kick back and re-listen to snippets of Smash. After all, music soothes even the savage beast.
